Dr Sofia Catarino is Professor and Researcher at Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal.
Previous Experience:
Graduate in “Agro-industrial” Engineering at Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (ISA, UTL), Sofia gained her first professional experience in a cooperative winery as commercial director. Following this she obtained a Master in Viticulture and Enology at the University of Porto. A next stage led to a PhD in “Agro-industrial” Engineering (ISA, UTL) with a doctoral thesis on the occurrence of contaminant metals in wines.
Since 2014 Sofia has been Assistant Professor of Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Universidade de Lisboa. She teaches chemical composition and sensorial qnalysis of grape and wine, vinification, stabilization and wine ageing, and wine analysis, within the Master of Engineering of viticulture and enology. In connection, she also teaches post-graduates in Viticulture and Enology.
Author of three theses, one book, 9 chapters in books, 22 papers in international scientific periodicals with referees, Sofia has produced 41 publications in conference proceedings and 59 presentations in scientific meetings.
Linked to her research, Sofia is Scientific supervisor for MSc students and research fellows in the scope of R&D projects. In addition, she is member of the editorial review board of “Ciência e Técnica Vitivinícola” and referee for scientific publications.
She is member of the sensory expert’s panel of “Comissão Vitivinícola Regional de Lisboa” in addition to a role as member of the Expert Group on Analytical Methods, in the OIV Portuguese Commission. Furthermore, she has been member of the Direction of the Portuguese Oenology Society (2004-2012) and currently responsible for Enology on the Coordinator Council of Professional Activities of this society. She holds the professional title of Enologist. Since 2018, she is board member of “Associação dos Laboratórios de Enologia” (ALABE).
Vinifera Teaching: Sofia teaches in Wine Analysis module, including laboratory work (M1). In addition she teaches stabilization and wine ageing to M2 students in Lisbon.
Research Interests:
Sofia is Research Fellow in the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and in the scope of R&D projects (1997-2009). In addition, she is assistant researcher in the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinarian Research, the research unit of Viticulture and Enology (2009-2014).
Sofia carries out scientific research in enology, with a focus on wine quality, quality control, wine safety and authenticity. She has expertise in mineral composition of grape and wine, with special regards to trace and ultra-trace elements, including heavy metals. Furthermore, she specializes in ICP-MS analytical methodologies for elemental and isotopic characterization.
In addition, she is an Integrated member of LEAF research unit (Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food; ISA, Universidade de Lisboa). Her work includes being member of the research team of several R&D projects in Enology and Viticulture domains. Also, she is coordinator of a R&D project on the development of analytical tools for wine traceability and authenticity.
