Akshay Baboo

Akshay Baboo, an esteemed alumnus of the Vinifera Master’s program, brought a wealth of experience from working in vineyards and wineries prior to joining the program. Armed with a BSc Hons in chemistry, zoology, and botany, Akshay’s diverse background laid a solid foundation for his viticultural journey.

Graduating in 2015 from the Vinifera program with his M2 studies conducted in Milano, Akshay’s master thesis, “Effects of rootstocks on yield, must composition, and disease,” demonstrated his dedication to exploring key aspects of viticulture.

Presently, Akshay holds the position of Programme Manager for Undergraduate courses in Viticulture and Oenology, as well as a professor of Wine Chemistry and Oenology at Plumpton College in the UK. His current research extends to engaging in research projects such as phenolic extraction in PiWI varietals, sparkling wine aging, and low-alcohol winemaking.

Reflecting on the impact of the Vinifera program on his career, Akshay attests that it provided him with the skills to continue his research in wine. Moreover, the program facilitated employment opportunities with some of the world’s most prestigious wine producers, offering invaluable connections with academics who have played a pivotal role in shaping his successful career journey.
