Sofia Catarino

Graduated (1995) and PhD. (2007) in Food Engineering, University of Lisbon; MSc. in Viticulture and Enology, University of Porto (2000). Professional Title of Enologist.Teaches and coordinates Enology related courses at master’s degree. Member of the course committees of Vinifera and of of the Master of Engineering in Viticulture and Enology (Instituto Superior de Agronomia, University of Lisbon). Integrated member of the research unit LEAF (Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food), Associate member of CeFEMA (Center of Physics, and Engineering of Advanced Materials). Holds important university extension positions, such as president of ALABE (Association of Enology Laboratories), coordinator of the Analysis Methods Expert Group of the Portuguese Commission of the International organization of Vine and Wine (CNOIV), president of the Portuguese Oenologist Professional Title Commission, member of a sensory expert panel of a wine certifying entity (Comissão Vitivinícola Regional de Lisboa). Combines a research background in Enology with deep understanding of the issues facing grape and wine producers.

Vinifera Teaching:

Coordinator of “Wine Analysis” module (M1, Montpellier); Coordinator of the curricular unit “Stabilization and Wine Aging” (M2, Lisbon)

Research interests:

Research activity in Enology with emphasis on wine quality control, in particular on wine traceability and authenticity using elemental and isotopic analysis. Development of analytical tools for geographic origin assessment and wine dating. Green Analytical Chemistry applied to wine analysis. Stabilization and Wine Aging. Modulation of alcohol in wines. Enological practices and sustainability.

International involvement:

“Activity in OENOVITI International Network; Member of the Work Group “Strategic development” of IVES -International Viticulture & Enology Society; Member of the Technical Committtee of UIOE- l’Union Internationale des Oenologues. Responsible investigator at ISA of the project H2020-MSCA-RISE-2019: vWISE – Vine and Wine Innovation through Scientific Exchange, involving several european and non-european academic and non-academic partners, coordinating ISA’s scientific secondments (e.g. to AWRI). Recently co-edited the book Improving Sustainable Viticulture and Winemaking Practices (Elsevier, Academic Press), involving 89 authors from 9 nationalities.
